Great people, Dope music, and the Man on the Moon himself, Mr. Rager, Mr. Solo Dolo, Our big brother, KID CUDI!
By: Pia Fergus
After waiting for hours outside, myself and fellow Spotlight contributor/editor Sarah Hernandez, were finally allowed inside Roseland Ballroom at around 6:30 pm. Our long wait paid off and we were front row at the sold out KiD CuDi concert. As we looked around the foggy, smoke filled venue all we could see were die-hard CuDi fans in Cleveland Indians fitted caps, sparking up blunts in the spirit of 4/20 (dubbed National Weed Day, for those of you who haven't never heard about it). Everyone was anxiously waiting for the show to start.
At around 7:30 pm, the opening act, an independent rapper that CuDi associates himself with, named Chip Tha Ripper, appeared on the stage and performed some songs from his mixtape(s). Chip was doing an excellent job hyping the crowd up and getting everyone ready for CuDi. Chip finished his performance with a bang and left everyone eager with anticipation for the main act. We then noticed CuDi's signature DJ, DJ Kasloco setting up his MAC laptop while waving to the fans in the crowd. The band was setting up too, CuDi brung out a live drummer, keyboardist, and guitarist (which made the sound more raw and a lot more epic than just having a DJ there to spin the records).
CuDi embraced the stage at 9:30 pm with his very anthemic song "REVOFEV", getting the crowd stirred up with the catchy hook "whoa whoa whoa whoaaa whoaaa!". Energy oozed from his skin as he worked every inch of the stage dancing and enticing the chanting of the lyrics. It was truly mezmerizing. He then took off his jacket, got comfortable, and delved into deeper songs such as "Don't Play This Song". He constantly interracted with the fans in the crowd, making them laugh by playing jokes on the band and teasing DJ Kasloco. He even thoroughly explained his story behind why he chose to give up smoking weed, which then led into what I would call the most "appropriate" song of the night, "Marijuana".
The crowd went wild for almost every song, and became shocked by the fact that CuDi brought out the rapper Cage to perform the song that they collaborated on, "Maniac". That was not the only collaboration of the night, he welcomed back Chip Tha Ripper to the stage to perform their very catchy song "All Talk" (which samples LCD Soundsystem's song "Dance Yrself Clean"). Just when the crowd thought all of the high energy was done for, he did a "Mucho Mega Mix" consisting of three songs, "CuDi Zone" "Memories" and "Day n Nite". During the mix, he got really close to the crowd to shake hands and dance with his fans. The crowd was in an uproar during the mix, it was like a huge rave party with strobe lights and bass hitting every angle of the venue.
Before leaving the stage for good, he gave the crowd a little speech relating to how he felt about the song "Pursuit Of Happiness". He basically stated that he knows that it is hard as a young person to do what you have to do and do what everyone else want's you to do as well. He made it clear that it is a song about finding "your OWN happiness". The crowd was the loudest during the line where he sang "People told me slow my roll, I'm screaming out FUCK THAT!". This just shows how much this Cleveland based rapper relates to the angry, ambitious and missunderstood youth of today. That last song of the night clearly had the most emotion and meaning to everyone.
The song playlist that was performed went as followed:
"REVOFEV"
"SCOTT MESCUDI VS. THE WORLD"
"SOUNDTRACK 2 MY LIFE"
"GHOST!"
"MOJO SO DOPE"
"WE AITE (WAKE YOUR MIND UP)"
"MARIJUANA"
"HEART OF A LION (KID CUDI THEME MUSIC)"
"SOLO DOLO (NIGHTMARE)"
"UP UP & AWAY"
"MAN ON THE MOON"
"DON'T PLAY THIS SONG"
"ERASE ME"
"TRAPPED IN MY MIND"
"MANIAC" (W/ CAGE)
"ALL TALK" (W/ CHIP THA RIPPER)
"HYYERR"
"ALL ALONG"
"MR. RAGER"
"MUCHO MEGA MIX"
"PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS"
Overall, it was an AWESOME night, one that I'm sure all CuDi fans who attended will not forget for the rest of their lives. Also, look out for the "Maniac" video that is debuting on Halloween of 2011! It's sure to be remarkable.
