“If I do this shit, I make sure I’m doing it to win.” - 100 Grand
Raw, in it‘s best definition, is 100 Grand, raw in talent and raw in lyrical content. Grand definitely does not hold back when he writes, he’s without a doubt one the most sincere lyricist I’ve ever heard. When it comes to his music, there is no censoring and no sugar coating. If your planning on listening to his music, be ready for the real deal.
So let’s let 100 Grand and his music speak for themselves, check out the Q&A we were able to do with him and some of his videos below.
Q: The first thing I’m curious about is your Stage Name, 100 Grand, how did that name come about?
A: “My stage name 100 G.R.A.N.D is actually an acronym for ‘Greatest Rapper Alive Never Died’, which means I’m aiming to be the best MC to ever do it, and that even when I die my music will always live on…. 100 is just because I always keep it [100%] real and genuine in my music; I never lie.”
Q: How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it?
A: “I would describe my music as everyday life music. The things we go through on a day to day [basis] is basically what I rap about…”
Q: When you where younger, did you know that music was what you wanted to pursue?
A: “I actually was not a fan of Hip Hop [when I was younger], I just listened to music just cause. My first passion was actually basketball, like every other kid growing up in Queens ... [but] I eventually found music [through being] introduced to it by my cousin.”
Q: Who are you major influences?
A: “My influences are 2pac, Stack bundles, and Jay-Z, because in my opinion their music stood for something.”
Q: That leads me into my next question, What inspires most of your music?
A: “LIFE. Every aspect of it inspires me to write what I write.”
Q: What does music do for you, what‘s it all about?
A: “Music actually helps me deal with the day to day struggles of life. It’s my motivation to make a difference in this world.”
Q: What do you feel you bring to the music scene that other rappers don’t? What makes you unique?
A: “I believe that I say what a lot of rappers are afraid to say. A quick example is when I said this line ‘Jay-Z wanna make a song about killing auto tune, he need to make a song about killing crack.’ … I don’t hold nothing back, I say what I want to say.”
Q: What’s your definition of good music?
A: “Anything that makes you feel good or just makes you rush to tell your friend ‘Check out this new song I heard’. BUT great music is the music that my mother and father listened to, because it not only made you want to share it with other people, [but] it made you change your perspective on life…”
Q: Who are you currently listening to, whether commercial or not?
A: “I’m listening to artists like J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar, because I feel like they represent what I represent within my music.”
Q: Since the creation of your first mixtape, how do you feel you have progressed as an artist?
A: “I believe I have progressed on so many different levels with my music as far as my flow goes, and just actually rapping about things that people can relate to rather then saying nothing on a track.”
Q: What can people expect from your upcoming LP QB2?
A: “People can expect a story about a kid growing up in Queens and his day to day struggles with life.”
Q; As an artist, you will have fans that respect and look up to you… if you had the chance to give them one piece of advice, what would it be?
A: “My advice to my fans would be: Slow it down, don’t move to fast and be you. Don’t ever be somebody you aint.”
Q: If you could do a collabo with anyone in the world, whether alive or dead, who would it be?
A: “Definitely 2pac hands down and that’s just because he was the most passionate person I have ever seen in my life.”
Q: As an artist, where would you like to see yourself in about 5 years?
A: “I would like to see me make enough money to make a difference in low income communities and become a role model for kids who have no father figures.”
Q: Any last words about yourself, your music, or even in general, that you want to share with your fans?
A: “I would just love for people to know that I’m one of the most sincere people when it comes to this rap shit, and I do it not for the money but because I genuinely love the art form.”
