NICKI MINAJ: MY TIME NOW

Written By: Pia Fergus

On Sunday, November 28th, 2010, MTV gave us fans of Nicki Minaj a closer look on the artist beyond her massive backside and colorful wigs. We got to see her come out of that cardboard box that she placed herself in as a "Barbie", and we saw her shed her plastic limbs for real human skin. Skin that cried, laughed, and argued. Skin that not only cared about her success, but that cared for the sake of her immediate family in New York and distant family in Trinidad. Skin that was REAL, skin that was RAW, the skin of a WOMAN.

The "My Time Now" documentary was an hour of getting to know the real Nicki. She took us on a journey through her childhood experiences, introduced us to her family, declared her goals, revealed her fears, and shared her opinions on issues such as ego. We got to see her do things that most of us aspire to do, such as overcome fear and perform in front of crowds of thousands of people, or something as touching as buying a house for our mothers. We got to see her complain about her outfits, and deliver in the studio. We also got to see her write her own lyrics, something that she prides herself a lot on.

If you have already seen it, leave your comments below, and tell us Spotlight writers if the documentary has changed your views on Nicki for better or for worse. If not, you can view the documentary at mtv.com to get to know the Harajuku Barbie. From this documentary, you should leave with a better understanding of the soon to be rap mogul, and a new respect for Onika Maraj.
